During the EYBA International Weekend 2018, which took place from 27 to 30 September at the Law Society in London, the European Young Bar Association represented by the President Guillaume Tatoueix had an honour to receive a medal from the Hong Kong Bar Association represented by Mr Sean Li.

The legal profession in Hong Kong consists of solicitors, barristers, “foreign lawyers”, and “notaries public”.

Barristers are legal practitioners expert in advocacy and specialising in litigation. Generally, only barristers have the right of audience in Hong Kong’s High Court, Court of Appeal and the Court of Final Appeal. Any person who satisfies the requirements set out in Barristers (Qualification for Admission and Pupillage) Rules may be admitted as a barrister.

Founded in Year 1949, the Hong Kong Bar Association is the professional organisation of barristers in Hong Kong and is registered under the Societies Ordinance.

The objects of the Hong Kong Bar Association are generally to consider and to take proper action on all matters affecting the legal profession and the administration of justice. These include:

  1. Maintenance of the honour and independence of the Bar;
  2. Improvement of the administration of justice in Hong Kong;
  3. Prescribing of rules of professional conduct, discipline and etiquette;
  4. Furtherance of good relations and understanding within the legal profession.

International Weekend is an annual event organised by the European Young Bar Association, the Junior Lawyers Division of the Law Society of England and Wales, the Young Barristers Committee of the Bar Council,  and the London Young Lawyers Group. It is one of the three conferences held by the EYBA throughout the year, where the young lawyers from all across Europe enjoy  a mix of technical  and skills-based seminars, get acquainted with the legal system of the host country and its culture, as well as networking with the colleagues from various jurisdictions.
